Adapter plate for my car's engine

Anyone here has tried to make an adapter plate? looking to create one so I can put a different transmission onto my car's engine. I'm not super mechanically experienced so I'm hoping someone can walk me through? TIA!

Why not start with a premade adapter kit if you're new to this? Making one from scratch takes precise measurements, machining, and alignment, it is super easy to mess up without experience.

I've been working on an adapter plate that I want to make out of aluminum since January. My biggest problem has been trying to get a machine shop to actually make it, there not to interested in 1 off jobs, but if you had your own cnc then it would be doable. I used a technique using a large sheet of thick paper and a lead pencil to get the outline of both engine and transmission holes and then passed that onto someone who knows cad to produce my drawings. Keeping the center point is crucial and make a working template out of mdf first to make sure it fits.

Well, it can work but you should know its not exactly beginner level but if you have good tools and can be patient, you can attempt it, map out bolt patterns from both the engine and the trans, measure input shaft length, pilot bearing fitment, all that fun stuff.

Yep, that sounds like a great plan. Making an MDF template first is smart to check the fit before cutting aluminum. And using CAD from your paper outline will keep the machining accurate

I make a lot of this type of part, I also quote for loads more and most of the time a custom one off is more expensive than the kits.
