When you’re not running parts, what small shop task gives you the biggest peace of mind?

I’m still kind of new and I get nervous when I’m not making chips because it feels like I’m wasting time. But I’m learning that some shop chores actually make the next job smoother.

A specific moment for me was yesterday when I wiped down the vise and table and suddenly the whole area felt ready for work. It was strangely satisfying. What’s the one non machining task you always end up doing when you want the shop to feel dialed?

For peace of mind, I’m big on a 5 minute tool check. Put the most-used cutters back in order, confirm holders are clean, and wipe tapers. A single chip on a taper can turn into a long day.

For me it’s basically cleaning plus a quick sanity check: vise jaws clean, parallels not buried in chips, and I’ll re check the coolant level or concentration if it looks off.

I'm pretty big on organizing (even my wife thinks I'm a little clean frk). so, I usually clean and manage the tools in the shop
