Setting work offsets for the first time, how do you stop being scared of Z?

I’m still pretty new to CNC and I’m nervous about setting work offsets, especially anything involving Z. I understand the concept, but when I’m standing at the machine it feels like one wrong step and the tool is going to drive straight into the part or the table. I’m excited to learn probing and offsets properly, I just want a simple routine that keeps things safe and repeatable.

A specific moment that made this feel real was this week when I went to set Z and I hovered over the buttons like I was defusing something. I did a slow approach and everything was fine, and it was satisfying when it finally matched what I expected, but I still felt shaky because I know I’m relying on caution more than a process. For the experienced folks here, what is your basic routine for setting work offsets and Z that helps prevent crashes and builds confidence fast?
 
The simplest way to stop being scared of Z is to build in intentional checkpoints. Confirm the correct tool and length info, confirm the active work offset, then do your first move in a way that proves you’re safe before you let it run normally. People crash when they skip verification, not because they lack courage.
 
The biggest confidence boost is doing a simple sanity check before you hit cycle start. Visually confirm tool length is correct, verify Z zero method, then do a dry run or single block with your hand near feed hold. It turns Z from scary into just another step you validate.
 
A simple verification is to position the spindle outside of the work and use MDI to lower the tool(s) to Z0.
