Newbie metrology kit for CNC, what measuring tools should I buy first?

I’m getting deeper into CNC and I’m realizing the basic measuring tools matter way more than I expected. I thought a caliper would cover everything, but now I’m hearing people say you really need micrometers, indicators, and maybe even gauge blocks if you want to avoid scrap and stop guessing. I’m excited to build a proper starter kit, I’m just confused about what to buy first and how cheap is too cheap before accuracy becomes a problem.

A specific moment that made me want to do this right was this week when I measured a part with a caliper and felt good about it, then checked again and got a slightly different reading. It was satisfying to see I’m catching things earlier, but it also made me realize I might be relying on the wrong tool for the tolerance I want. For the experienced folks here, what metrology tools were your best early purchases, and what brands or price range felt like the minimum before you stop fighting questionable readings?

You’re learning the right lesson early. A caliper is great for quick checks, but once you care about tighter fits, a mic and an indicator start paying for themselves. What tolerances are you aiming for most of the time, like plus or minus five thou or closer.
