G54 coordinate system

I want to learn how the G54 coordinate system works and find some online tutorials with drawings to help me understand it. im using a Doosan Puma 280 turning center with a Fanuc controller. i know G and M codes pretty well but I still dont get how the machine figures out where the tool is compared to the part with G54. I just started a job where i need to know this. i also want to know how to use the Q setter. its been a while since i last used one and the shop im at doesnt know how or want to use it. i think it could speed up setup times.
 
G54 is just your part's zero point, like where the machine knows to start cutting. You set it with offsets for X, Y, Z. On your doosan, just input the numbers, and the machine figures it out. The Q setter makes tool length measurement easier, saving setup time. You just let it measure the tool automatically

+1 on this. Was gonna say this but thank G @jerryhilfiger had the same thoughts it saved me from typing a redundancy lol. So you should set your G54 manually. If you really need something that helps and perhaps you're a visual learner, just search for Fanuc G64 work offset tutorials on YT or TikTok. There's about so much.
 
G54 sets your part zero so the machine knows where the workpiece is, so you touch off your tool, enter the offsets, and that's your reference. just to add to what has been said

YouTube is the answer. They said everything there is to say anyway. Did you manage to figure it out in the 2 weeks you posted?

Hey, just checking in! Have you found any helpful resources or made any progress with the G54 setup? Also, how's everything going with the Q setter?

Nice choice looking into this! G54 just shifts your machine's zero to match your part's zero. You touch off your tool, save those settings in G54, and your program knows exactly where your part is. The Q setter is a quick way to get your tool offsets right, it's surprising the shop isn't using it since it really speeds up the setup.
 
Got it! G54 helps you set where your part starts, compared to where the machine thinks it starts. For the Puma 280, just use the Q-setter to get your tools touching and automatically load those offsets. It makes setting things up way faster and keeps everything the same each time.
