cleaning a CNC router

I've noticed that my Onsrud CNC router rails are covered in a nasty mix of grease and wood dust, it's super sticky!
what do you guys usually use to clean this? I need to clean this mess without damaging the metal rails or peeling the machine's paint

Wood dust and grease on router rails can turn into a pretty sticky combo, and it’s definitely something worth getting under control before it builds up too much. Most folks around here use a mild solvent or dedicated rail cleaner first, then follow with a lint-free cloth to avoid scratches. After that, a light application of machine way oil or rail lube keeps things moving smoothly without attracting more dust. Do you usually run a cover over your rails, or is the dust basically free to settle everywhere?

Just be aware some of the modern synthetic oils can have additives that affect them over time, especially if you're doing high precision work.

I’m pretty conservative with cleaning since paint and seals can be easy to damage. For my router rails, I use lint free rags and a mild degreaser diluted way down. I test it on a hidden spot first just in case. Once it’s clean, I reapply a light coat of proper rail lubricant so it doesn’t attract dust as fast next time. That step made a big difference for me.
