CNC + laser combo projects is worth it for hobbyists?

I’ve been into PC building for a while, and lately I’ve been getting into CNC routing for cutting wood and acrylic panels. Now I’m wondering if it’s worth adding a laser setup into the mix. For a hobbyist in North Carolina, mostly doing custom PC cases and small woodworking projects, is the CNC + laser combo really worth it? I like the idea of engraving designs or doing cleaner cuts on acrylic, but I don’t want to sink a ton of money into gear I won’t use much. Anyone here tried running both? Did it open up a lot more project possibilities, or does one usually sit idle while you favor the other?

I think adding a diode laser to your CNC is a solid upgrade for your projects! For custom PC cases and acrylics, it excels at fine detail engraving and clean, fast cuts on thinner materials. These tasks would be slow or impossible with an end mill! It's also a relatively cheap way to add capability. You won't stop using your router, but the laser becomes your go-to for detailing, etching, and thin material processing. Just a quick tip that you should prioritize safety and ventilation before you fire it up!

If you’ve got the space and patience, go for it! like but fair warning, once you add a laser you’ll start engraving everything in sight. Wood, panels, phone cases, your coffee mug, maybe even your cat’s nameplate. Just don’t expect it to magically turn every project into a masterpiece. It’s a fun rabbit hole, not a shortcut.

adding a laser is a game changer for branding and aesthetics. the CNC is great for cutting out the main 120mm fan holes or GPU mounts, but the laser is what you’ll use for the wow factor. It makes the build look like a professional product rather than a DIY project
