Is grease packed spindle for precision cabinetry worth the trade off?

Not sure if this is the correct place to post but I use the Haas VF4SS to cut high-grade wood panels for custom cabinetry. The Air/Oil 12k spindle delivers speed, but oil cleanup is a hassle during production runs. Would the grease-packed 10k spindle hold up to heavy use, or would it wear out faster over time?
 
A number of guys I know in woodworking use the grease-packed 10k spindles on their Haas machines for similar applications. While the 12k is great for speed, the oil mess is definitely a pain. The 10k grease-packed should hold up fine for heavy use on wood panels, and you'll appreciate not dealing with the oil. You might see a marginal difference in tool life at the very high end of your feed rates compared to the 12k, but for wood, it should not be a significant factor.

Sorry I'm hopping in a bit late. You know how it is, service life can be a bit unpredictable. But the good news is that a lot of those 10k grease-packed spindles can keep going strong for years with just a little TLC. Just make sure to keep the bearings clean and watch out for any funny sounds or heat. It's all about staying on top of things

I haven't switched yet but I'm thinking about going with the 10k grease-packed spindle for my next order. I'll pay attention to bearing noise and keep an eye on temps during longer runs, like you suggested. Do you know if Haas recommends a set schedule for checking the grease or is it more about listening and feeling for changes? I want to have everything ready by October so I can start the holiday build season smoothly.

For tough, heavy-duty passes, oil spindles are your way to go. But for lighter work and finishing touches, grease spindles are often more convenient and do the job just fine.

I'd keep it simple. Haas doesn't give a strict schedule, so just watch the temps, listen for weird noises, and pay attention to how it feels. Staying alert will help you catch any problems early.
 
When it comes to woodworking, using air/oil spindles is crucial if you're tackling heavy material removal, especially with hardwoods thicker than an inch, or if you're working at high feed rates where overheating can be a real issue. These spindles are also a must for ongoing production runs where regular spindle bearings just can't handle the heat.

If you notice that your spindle temperatures are hitting over 140°F or you start hearing strange noises from the bearings during normal operations, it's definitely time to consider an upgrade.

Hey @Saint_Sophia that's not a dumb question at all, it's the exact trade off I'm wrestling with.

My impression is the same as yours. The "set it and forget it " nature of a grease packed spindle is a huge plus because it seems simpler. My concern is whether that convenience leads to a shorter lifespan or performance issues when the machine is running hard all day, like I mentioned with the 140°F temperatures.

Hopefully, some of the experienced folks here can shed some light on how they really hold up over the long term.
