What would you buy again, ER, shrink fit, or hydraulic holders?

Let’s keep the comparison simple. ER collets, shrink fit, or hydraulic holders. Which one do you trust the most for consistent results, and why? I’m curious what people actually prioritize, like low runout, rigidity, ease of swapping tools, cost, or having fewer things that can go wrong.

What does each system do well or poorly in your experience, and what kind of work pushed you toward your current choice? If you run a mix, share your rule of thumb for when you choose one holder type over another. Those details are usually what help someone decide.

My simple rule right now is ER for general milling and drills, then I’d only go shrink or hydraulic when finish and runout become the bottleneck and I’m repeating the same tools a lot. Hoping 2026 is the year I stop overthinking holders and just get consistent results.

My mental rule is ER for “lots of tools, lots of changeovers,” shrink fit for “set it once and trust it,” hydraulic for “finish ops where chatter ruins your day.” I like fewer things to mess up when I’m learning, so ER wins most days and I only reach for the nicer stuff when the finish really matters.
