What was your first real “lesson learned” moment in machining?

What’s one rookie CNC mistake you’ll never forget? The kind that teaches you a lesson fast, like running the wrong offset, forgetting to tighten a collet, loading the wrong tool, or trusting a setup you should have double checked. Everyone has at least one story that sticks. If you look back at your early days or even a recent slip, what happened and what did it teach you?

I learned early that confidence can be dangerous in machining. I assumed I had loaded the right tool and didn’t verify it. One wrong assumption turned into a ruined part. It taught me to never trust memory over actually checking the machine.

Mine was trusting a setup just because it “looked fine.” I skipped a second check on Z after a tool change and hit cycle start like everything was good. It wasn’t. Nothing catastrophic, but enough noise and scrap to make my stomach drop. Taught me real fast that confidence doesn’t replace verification.
