Quick fun thread for the CNC Forum in 2026. Shop people tend to have very specific “this is satisfying” brains, so I’m curious what hobbies you think more machinists would enjoy if they tried it once.

What hobby would you recommend, and what’s the reason you think it would click with shop people? Bonus question, is it something hands-on and tactile, or something totally different like music, cooking, or fitness that still scratches the same “process and improvement” itch?

Woodturning seems like it would click with machinists fast. Same focus on tool control and finish, but it’s lower stakes and the feedback is instant. Plus it’s satisfying when the chatter goes away and everything smooths out.

Photography. You can start with just your smartphone and some free software to enhance images. For there the sky is the limit. It's good for your eyes to focus on distant things some of the time, and if you don't like exercising just to sweat gives a good opportunity to go wander for extended periods outdoors. Just not today, I loved winter hiking and climbing 45 years ago, now just being outside for more than a few minutes in cold makes my knees hurt!
