What’s your go-to “don’t panic” routine when the CNC feels off?

I want to hear how the experienced folks handle this in real shops. When something feels off on a CNC, what’s your mental checklist before you start suspecting the control, the ballscrews, backlash, or a mechanical problem.

What’s the quickest test cut or verification move you rely on. Do you re-pick up a datum, re-probe, check spindle load trends, verify tool numbers, check the last setup change, or compare to a known good program.

Drop your routine and any “common trap” you see newer operators fall into. Those little traps are what this forum can help people avoid.

I run a tiny test cut in air and then on scrap. Same tool, same path, but shallow. If it repeats the issue, it is real. If it vanishes, it was setup or chip buildup. Common trap is blaming backlash when the vise or fixture is loose. Indicate the setup before you touch the control.

First check is tool number and offsets. Wrong length offset, wrong wear offset, wrong work coordinate, those cause more panic than real mechanical issues. Then I re pick up one reference edge and compare.
