Quick shop habits thread for the CNC Machining Forum

When it comes to probing, offsets, and tool length, what’s the one check you never skip even when you’re trying to move fast?

I’m trying to collect the boring but reliable routines that keep jobs smooth. The stuff that feels slow until you remember what a bad first move can cost

If you’ve got a simple checklist or sequence you follow, share it. And if you’ve been burned before, what part did you skip that time that you won’t skip again now

I never skip a quick re-touch of the work offset after I think I’m “done” clamping. Even just a light bump while tightening can move things more than you’d expect. My rule is probe, clamp, probe again, then start.

Mine is a quick double touch on Z for the first tool. Same spot, same routine, check it repeats within a couple tenths or whatever your shop tolerates. If it does not repeat, I stop and figure out why before I run the program.

I always re probe Z after changing tools or after any crashy moment, even a small bump. And I like checking one known feature with the probe just to confirm X and Y feel right.
