So, you got your Hurco Ultimax II spindle motor fixed, but now it's not stopping in the correct spot for tool changes? Bummer! Got any thoughts on what might fix it?

That sounds like a spindle orientation issue. It's usually caused by the encoder or the spindle drive. Since you just had the motor fixed, maybe the spindle encoder wasn't re-zeroed or is misaligned? Check your machine's parameters and find the one for spindle orientation. Manually rotate the spindle to where it should be, then slowly adjust the parameter up or down. You should see the spindle's stopping position shift with each change.

If that doesn't fix it, it could be a tuning issue with the spindle drive itself, which handles the orientation. But if you're not comfortable with those, it might be better to call in a tech.

The issue might be with the spindle encoder or the servo motors. Check for proper calibration and alignment, as these components control the spindle's precise positioning

Thanks for this! When you change the spindle stop position, do you do it from the control screen or somewhere deeper in the system? And if the encoder is off, is there a way to check it without taking the motor out again?

Sure, happy to help! The spindle stop position is usually adjusted from the control screen under a Parameters or Machine Data menu.

To check the encoder alignment without removing the motor, view the spindle orientation position on the diagnostic screen while manually turning the spindle. An inconsistent or jumping number at the zero point indicates a misaligned encoder. Consistent overshooting or undershooting is another sign the drive isn't getting a clean signal.

The repair must have set off your home sensor, check the spindle indexing and make sure the control system is calibrated for the motor

yeah, this is the first thing to try. you need to look for a parameter that controls the spindle's home position or orientation offset.
It's usually a small number (like 0 to 360 degrees) that the control adds to the encoder's reading to make sure the spindle stops exactly where the tool changer expects it to.
It's a quick and easy way to fix a minor misalignment. Just be careful when you start messing with those parameters, maybe write down the original number first!

Is that offset usually listed in the machine manual or buried in the control settings? Also wondering if changing it affects anything else like rigid tapping. Thanks! helping out a friend with a similar issue.
