December was rough in a quiet way. Nothing failed, nothing scrapped, but I kept fighting light chatter and finish issues that weren’t there earlier in the year. Dimensions were fine, but the parts didn’t look as good as they should.

It made me realize I’ve been prioritizing getting parts out the door over refining how I get there. For 2026, I want to focus more on setup discipline, CAM choices, and reducing the little inefficiencies that winter seems to magnify.

So i'm curious what machining skills or habits others want to sharpen in 2026 after a year of lessons like this.

This is such a real shift. I’ve definitely had that “I’m shipping parts but I’m not improving” realization. For 2026 I want CNC machining to feel more repeatable, especially in setup. My first small change is doing a short “setup audit” before cutting: stickout minimized, clamps not sketchy, tool path direction makes sense, and a quick air cut when it’s a new geometry. It adds minutes but saves hours of fighting finish later.
