Is the jump to carbide really worth it for short runs?

Thinking about moving away from HSS tooling and switching over to carbide for most of our small batch jobs. We do a mix of aluminum and mild steel here in Wisconsin, and I’m trying to decide if the cost difference is really justified for our kind of work. I’ve always liked how forgiving HSS tools are when experimenting with feeds and speeds, but the wear rate’s starting to show now that we’re doing longer runs. For those who’ve made the switch recently, are you actually seeing longer tool life and better finishes or like just faster wear when the feeds aren’t perfect?
 
Carbide’s worth it once you’ve got your feeds and rigidity dialed in. If the setup’s solid, you’ll get way longer life and better finishes. But if your machine chatters or your workholding’s sketchy, you’ll just break expensive cutters faster. It’s not magic, just less forgiving.
 
We use both. HSS for fixtures and oddball jobs, carbide for anything repeatable. The biggest change isn’t speed but it’s consistency. Carbide lets you walk away mid-run without worrying about dull edges creeping up. Just don’t go cheap on holders the runout kills carbide fast.
 
Yeah, carbide’s definitely worth it in most cases, but it depends on how dialed your setups are. For short runs in aluminum and mild steel, you’ll see better finish and tool life if your feeds and rigidity are decent. If your machine or fixturing flexes a lot, carbide can chip faster than HSS. It’s tougher stuff, just less forgiving when things aren’t tight.
