How do you deal with uneven clamping on small parts?

Dealing with chatter from a not-so-perfect clamp job drives me nuts. I don’t have fancy hydraulic vises, so I’ve been experimenting with a few budget tricks like rubber pads cut from an old mouse mat and thin strips of aluminum can as shims. Surprisingly, it helps a bit with uneven pressure.

But I’m wondering what else people use when you don’t have the luxury of precision plates or a surface grinder. Do you guys just reface the stock every time, or do you tweak feeds and DOC to keep the tool quiet? I’m trying to find a repeatable, low-cost workaround before I overcomplicate it.
 
That’s a clever setup actually. Uneven clamping usually means uneven stress, so a small sacrificial soft jaw or custom spacer might give you repeatability without fancy gear. Do you notice the chatter worse on climb or conventional passes? That usually hints at which side’s losing grip.
 
that’s the eternal small-part struggle. Mouse pads and shims actually aren’t a bad move. I’ve seen people use brass shim stock or even strips of plastic from soda bottles for the same reason like gives a bit of give without flexing too much. If you can, try keeping the tool pressure light on entry cuts and sneak up on depth and that usually helps when clamping isn’t perfect.
 
I’ve been messing with a little wooden wedge trick on one side to balance the load like kinda janky but it helps when the jaws don’t sit square. Also found that cutting my DOC just a bit saves a lot of stress on the setup.
 
Rubber and aluminum shims are smart quick fixes. Some folks use brass shim stock or soft jaws with a light texture for grip. Uneven clamping can sneak up even on solid setups. Adjusting feed rates helps, but consistency usually comes from better surface contact. Wondering if others prefer re-facing or shimming for small-run jobs.
