Haas VF-2 acting up on ATC

I'm trying to help a friend with his Haas VF-2 that's acting up during automatic tool changes. It loads tools fine by hand, but during ATC, it sometimes drops them or doesn't seat them properly. I've worked mostly with older Mazaks, so I'm not sure if the Haas uses a similar drawbar setup.

Could this be an arm alignment issue or something with the carousel? We haven't checked the manual yet. Thanks!
 
Just a quick reminder to check the drawbar force and make sure that carousel is lined up just right. You know how it goes, if those connections are loose or things are out of whack, it can really mess with the tool changes.
 
If the arm and carousel aren't lined up just right, tools might not fit properly, or they could miss the mark completely. Make sure bolts are tight, bushings aren't worn, and there's no sign the arm is drifting off-center. Also, check the carousel. Even a tiny indexing error can throw tool alignment way off.

I'd first check the pot alignment. The carousel pot might be slightly out of sync with the spindle, causing the tool to not seat correctly. The manual has the exact procedure, but you'll use M39 to unclamp and then manually rotate the carousel to check the alignment. If that looks good, it's likely a weak drawbar. The Belleville washers inside lose their force over time. It might hold a tool okay, but the dynamic motion of the ATC arm can cause it to drop. You'll need a drawbar force gauge to test this.
