Confused about buying used high end CNC vs new entry level

I’m trying to understand the basics of buying a CNC for a small shop and I keep getting stuck on the used higher end versus new entry level question. In my head, a used Mazak or Okuma sounds like a dream because the capability seems real. Then I look at a new Haas or Tormach and the appeal is that it feels simpler and less risky.

A specific moment that made this feel real was when I visited a small shop recently and saw an older Mazak running parts smoothly. The finish looked great and the machine sounded confident. It was honestly satisfying to watch because it felt like a serious tool. Then the owner casually mentioned they have to stay on top of maintenance and sometimes wait on parts. That is the part that scares me because downtime feels like it could wipe out the savings fast.

If you were advising someone small scale, how do you weigh this. Do you go used Mazak or Okuma for capability, or new Haas or Tormach for predictability and support?

That older Mazak running smooth is exactly the temptation. For me the question is do you have the cash buffer for a surprise repair and a week of downtime. If not, new Haas or Tormach starts looking smarter. Do you have a dealer or service tech nearby for any of these brands.

The sticker price is never the real price. For used, assume you’re also buying history, maintenance habits, and unknown wear. Ask for spindle hours, alarm history, maintenance logs, and do a warm spindle run with a test cut if they’ll allow it. For new, ask what support looks like in your area and how fast parts show up. In February weather, shipping delays and service travel time are real factors.
