CNC reality check: what mistake made you change your routine?

Everyone has that one story that still hurts a little. What was the most expensive thing you threw away, and what check did you add to your routine because of it?

You might want to check the first tool, check stickout, re-touch off after a tool change, confirm WCS, run a dry run above the part, or do a quick sanity check on the program. What is the "one check" that you trust more than anything else right now?

If you want to give more information, what were you running and what went wrong? Did you use the wrong offset, tool, stock, workholding shift, cutter wear, or just set up too quickly?

Most expensive scrap for me was a near-finished part that got wiped by the wrong work offset. Now my one check is confirming WCS and the active offset on the control before I hit cycle start, every time. It feels silly until the day it saves you.

I blamed code once and wasted time, but it was a loose clamp and the part shifted mid cut. My “one check” now is physically touching the workholding and re checking clamp torque before a long cycle. If the setup is solid, the rest is easier to trust.
