Alright machinists and metal enthusiasts, let's dive into the age-old debate of brass versus aluminums. I recently started experimenting with both materials on my X2 mill and C3 lathe, and here's what I've noticed. Brass is surprisingly easier to tap than aluminum, even though it's supposed to be harder. When drilling, brass produces powdery shavings, while aluminums throws out sharp, clingy bits that seem determined to make a mess.
So, what's the deal here. Is brass just a more forgiving material to work with, or is there some hidden science behind this. And while we're at it, why isn't brass more popular for machining. Is it just the price, or are there other factors at play.
Also, I'm curious about steel. Is it easier to tap than aluminum, or am I setting myself up for a tougher challenge. Share your insights, tips, or even your funniest machining mishaps. Let's settle this debate once and for all.
 
ill just leave a few points to my best knowledge, brass taps easier than aluminum because it's rigid and doesn't gall, while aluminum grabs the tap and causes chatter. Aluminum's cheap and light, but brass machines cleaner. Price keeps brass from being more popular.
steel? just depends really, mild steel is manageable, but stainless can be brutal without cutting fluid. If you think aluminum's tough, steel will really test your patience.
