Best bang for buck end mills for general work!

I wanted to start a practical comparison thread for the CNC Machining Forum, because in the USA in 2026 a lot of people doing general work end up bouncing between Harvey, Helical, and YG-1. All three can cut, but the value equation looks different depending on material, spindle time, and how much you hate babysitting tools.

Which brand are you buying most often, and what’s your best “bang for buck” pick? I’m curious what you’re optimizing for, like tool life, surface finish, predictable performance, price, or availability. If you have a specific end mill style you keep reordering, like 3-flute aluminum cutters or 4-flute general purpose, share that too.

The way I think about bang for buck is which end mill lets you run without babysitting and still gives repeatable results. I’m curious if people reach for Harvey or Helical more for aluminum and YG 1 for general steel, or if that’s outdated thinking.

I don't want to sound ignorant, but who is harvey, what is meant by helical and where is yg-1 (I mean what?)

Hi @dgjohnsonstein, no worries! It can be confusing because "helical" is also a geometry term.

To clear it up:

• Harvey Tool: Famous for "specialty" cutters. If you need a tiny 0.010" end mill or a weird undercut cutter, you go to Harvey.
• Helical Solutions: Harvey's sister company. They focus on high-performance standard end mills (for hogging out material fast).
• YG-1: A massive Korean manufacturer. They are huge in the "value" segment.

To answer Alan's question on "Bang for Buck":

My vote goes to YG-1, hands down.

Specifically the Alu-Power series (3-flute) for aluminum. They are incredibly affordable, and the performance is 90% of the high-end brands for 50% of the price. If I crash a YG-1, I just grab another one. If I crash a Helical, it ruins my morning.

However, there is a nuance:

• Job Shop / General Work: YG-1 is king.
• Production Run (10,000 parts): I might switch to Helical or Garr. The extra tool life and slightly faster MRR (Material Removal Rate) pay for the expensive tool over a long run.

But for general day-to-day work? YG-1 is hard to beat.
