Anyone with small mills getting good results using adaptive paths?

I started trying adaptive toolpaths on my smaller CNC mill and I am not sure if I am doing it right. Some cuts look cleaner and some feel like the machine is pushing itself too much. I watched a few videos but they all assume you are running a big industrial machine, so I am still confused about what settings make sense for something smaller. I just want to keep things steady without breaking tools or stressing the machine. If anyone here has used adaptive toolpaths on a compact mill, I would really appreciate hearing how you set things up. Did it make your cuts better or did you end up going back to regular toolpaths?
 
On a smaller mill you have to dial adaptive way back from what the videos show. Lower step-over, lighter load, and keep the RPM reasonable so the machine isn’t flexing itself to death. Once I slowed things down, the finish actually improved.
 
Ignore the videos showing huge stepovers. The trick is to be very conservative with your Radial Engagement (or Stepover). Drop it down to 5% or 7% of the cutter diameter. This keeps the tool load consistent and allows you to use a much higher feed rate without stressing the spindle or the tool. You trade width for speed!
 
A compact mill can run adaptive paths just fine as long as you tune them for low rigidity and lower horsepower. Smaller stepovers, slower feed rates, and shallower engagement usually keep the tool happy without overworking the machine. It could help to run a few tests on scrap with different stepovers so you see where the sweet spot is. Are you cutting mostly aluminum or something tougher?
