Anyone getting real gains from AI CAM software?

I keep hearing about AI-assisted CAM tools that “optimize” feedrates automatically, but I can’t help thinking it’s another marketing push. Most of the time the best feedrate adjustments still come from experience like listening to the spindle, watching chip load, and knowing your setup.

For those running production in California, have you seen real gains using AI-assisted feedrate optimization? I get that it might help on long, consistent runs, but for one-off or prototype work, it feels like overkill.

Would love to know if anyone’s put one of these systems head-to-head with a tuned manual program and actually saved time or improved surface finish.

The feedrate optimization might be marginal, but the real time saver is the 80% faster programming time.
For one offs, getting a decent program in 3 minutes vs. 3 hours is the actual real gain.

yeah, AI is a great assistant, not a replacement. It takes the guesswork out of 90% of the roughing and semi finishing, but you still need that human programmer to review, tweak the finish passes, and hit the big red button with confidence. It's more about raising the floor for all programmers than replacing the best ones
 
It’s definitely a mix of both. I use it to get the baseline program 90% of the way there, then I tweak the last 10% based on what I hear at the spindle
for prototype work, yeah it’s overkill, for a 500piece run of 6061, the 5 seconds it saves per part adds up fast
 
This is a solid question and I’m curious where the forum lands on it. AI CAM sounds great in a demo, but real shops have real variables. If you’ve tried it, share what machine and material you ran, and what “gain” actually meant for you: cycle time, tool life, finish, fewer crashes, less babysitting.
