Air blast vs coolant what’s giving you better results?

I’ve been running mostly air blast lately for aluminum parts and it’s been cleaner and easier to manage than coolant, especially on smaller batch runs. The chips clear fine, surface finish looks great, and there’s no sticky mess to deal with afterward. That said I can’t lie... coolant still gives a bit of peace of mind on longer runs when I’m worried about heat buildup. Just curious what everyone else prefers for aluminum these days. Are you all sticking with coolant for consistency, or have more people switched to air blast setups full-time? I’m not trying to start a “one is better” debate, just seeing what works best across different shops.
 
Air blast can feel like a breath of fresh air compared to coolant cleanup, especially on low-volume work. Coolant still wins when you’re pushing harder or running long ops, but for lighter cuts it’s almost overkill. Do you track tool life differences between the two, or has it felt about the same so far?
 
I’m leaning air blast more and more for aluminum just because it keeps the shop cleaner and I’m not spending half my weekend scrubbing off dried coolant. For quick runs or prototypes, it’s been solid. Only time I switch back to coolant is when I’ve got a long cycle where the cutter’s living in the cut too long. Heat creep still makes me nervous on multi-op stuff.
 
I've always preferred air blast for any material that cuts cleanly without added lubrication. I've seen charts from insert vendor (Kennametal IIRC) tests showing 80% of the cutting heat generated leaves with the chips when your feeds and speeds are good. Most of my long run cuts were (retired clock guy) in brass using small to very small cutters. Any recutting of chips meant broken tools and brass is cut dry, so the air blast habit developed long ago and it works well enough for me. I guess if you have a machine that can blast through 300 PSI flood from four nozzles it's different, but that sort of capability isn't happening in my small hobby shop world. Clean up is usually a bigger deal that the actual machining. Anything to make it easier without sacrificing quality puts a sloppy grin on my face.
