Helping my buddy sort out his 2005 Haas TL-1 and we're stuck on tool offsets. He's using a 1" aluminum round and touching off OD tools, but the X axis keeps alarming out during dry runs. Is there a common reason why X0 wouldn't register in MDI?

Hi @Chisholm Mills, have you manually homed all axes before trying to set the offsets? On older machines, if an axis isn't properly zeroed out, it can mess with everything. Do a full power up restart and zero all axes, then try again

We have the same TL-1 (it's a 2005 also) here at the school I work for. One of the issues we run into all of the time is the students forget to orient the tools correctly for the post which then causes an X axis alarm. All of the posts I have seen assume that this has a rear mounted tool p[post and ours is front, so all fo the X moves are in the wrong direction and cause an error.

If your buddy's X axis is alarming out right after touching off, it's almost certainly a Tool Offset issue causing a Software Overtravel alarm. The TL-1 has limited X travel. When he touches off the 1.000" OD bar, the value he enters into the X geometry offset must be the diameter of the part he touched, so it should be 1.000 (or very close). If this value is too large, the control thinks the tool needs to move past its physical limit to reach X0 in MDI. I suggest you have him double-check that 1.000 is entered into the X geometry offset and try G0X0 in MDI again.
