I wanted to start a practical CNC Machining Forum thread on tool life management, especially the simple habits that prevent bad surprises.
How do you decide when to retire a tool, before it turns a good part into scrap? Do you go by time in cut, number of parts, visual inspection, sound, spindle load, surface finish drift, or just experience?
Also, how do you track wear without being overly fancy? Some shops have full tool management systems, but a lot of us are working with simpler setups. Notes on the setup sheet, a counter in the program, sharpie marks, a bin system, whatever works.
Finally, what warning signs did you learn to stop ignoring? The small changes that used to feel normal, but you now treat as a “swap it now” signal.
