Tiny G-code tweaks that make programs smoother, what’s your go to?

There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a program run clean. No weird pauses, no nervous moments, just smooth motion and a cycle time that feels tight without being reckless. I’m not even talking huge strategy changes, I mean the small tweaks that quietly make everything nicer.

One example from this week: I noticed a program was doing these tiny unnecessary retracts between features that were basically right next to each other. I cleaned that up, tightened the retract height, and suddenly the motion looked more confident and the cycle time dropped a bit without changing the cut at all. It wasn’t dramatic, but it felt like free money.

What’s your favorite small G-code optimization that consistently makes programs cleaner? Retracts, rapids, lead-ins, tool order, canned cycles, something else?

my favorite tweak is swapping short G0 rapids for high speed G1 dog leg moves between close features
on many older machines, a G0 move can be jerky and cause the machine to shake if it's jumping around small pockets

Same thing happens to me, you watch the tool and you can tell it’s wasting motion. I’ve been getting better results just by reordering features so the tool stays in one area, like finish all pockets in a zone before bouncing across the part. Also checking that rapids aren’t getting broken up by tiny modal changes. Do you mostly hand edit at the machine or fix it upstream in CAM.

Good example on retract height. The small win I see most is cleaning up “modal chaos” so the control isn’t constantly flipping states. Keep your planes and feed modes consistent, don’t pepper the program with redundant G90/G54/M-codes, and make your retracts intentional so you’re not doing little Z pogo sticks all day.
