One CNC habit you’re fixing in 2026

It’s the first couple days of 2026 which means it’s time for the annual tradition of saying “this year I’m going to be more disciplined” while the shop immediately tests that promise.

So I’m curious for the CNC machining crowd. What’s one thing you want to improve in 2026?

Setup discipline. Tool management. Programming habits. Keeping tolerances predictable. Maybe even just slowing down enough to catch the mistake before it becomes an expensive souvenir.

Nothing has to be dramatic. Sometimes the biggest upgrade is as simple as labeling stuff, documenting offsets better, or sticking to a checklist even when you’re in a hurry. What’s your one shop resolution, and what’s the first small change you’re making to actually follow through?
 
My CNC resolution is tool management. I lose time hunting for holders, inserts, wrenches, and it adds up fast. First small change this week is labeling drawers and having a dedicated spot for the “always used” tools so they stop migrating around the shop. It’s not glamorous but it’s the kind of thing that makes everything smoother.
 
Mine is setup discipline. In 2026 I want fewer “wait which offset is this” moments. The small change is I’m forcing myself to write tool lengths and work offsets on the setup sheet every single time and not trusting memory.
 
I’m fixing the “rush the first part” habit. In 2026 I want every job to start with the same boring checks so I stop relying on vibes. My first change is a two minute warm start, confirm correct work offset, confirm tool length, then single block the first moves.

My resolution for 2026 is to kill the habit of saying 'I'll just deburr that by hand later.'

I catch myself skipping the chamfer or edge-break toolpaths just to get the program running 5 minutes sooner, only to spend 20 minutes standing there with a file or sandpaper wishing I hadn't been so lazy.

My fix: I've updated my default CAM templates to include a deburring operation automatically. Now I have to actively delete it if I don't want it, rather than remembering to add it. Let the machine do the work!
